Burden Unburdened

They made you feel like a burden,
borne by those stronger than thee.
They would push, pull & carry,
help but complain constantly!

Some days they would milk it more,
martyrs pushing your wheelchair.
“Look strangers, aren’t I lovely
for pushing her here to there?”

They made you feel like a burden,
baggage best left home on shelf.
Grumbling and anguished at all
that you couldn’t do yourself.

Sometimes sibling sulked,
saddened that you got attention.
“It’s not fair! She’s so ill,
I never even get a mention!”

She made me feel like a burden,
because it was always my fault.
She saw my wounds – insecurities –
and rubbed in such stinging salt.

Nothing was ever good enough,
no matter what I would do.
If she could she’d blame for Kennedy
and possibly World War Two.

She made me feel like a burden,
because her glass was never full.
I tried to show her colours
but her whole world was always dull.

Then we found each other,
like some wonderful wild dream!
Instead of being burdens,
became apparent we were a team!

I support you physically,
these legs were made to run.
You support me emotionally,
make me feel the lucky one.

They made us feel like a burden
but it simply isn’t true.
I’ve felt myself unburdened
since the day I fell for you.

  2. burdened by
    this world of hate;
    we long
    we wander;
    looking for
    someone:
    to share this,
    burden with;
    to help them
    with theirs;
    and somehow
    in this equation
    of love,
    we both
    feel light.

    This is amazing……..sweet, profound and beautiful……absolutely loved it!!! 🙂 🙂

    1. That’s very kind of you to say so. 🙂 Hopefully my fiancee will agree with you when she reads it. She’s been rather ill lately, so has fallen behind with my writing.

      If you haven’t already done so, I’d appreciate it if you were willing to Follow my site. If you’re unsure whether it’s worth the click, please check out some of my other pieces from the Top Posts chart (such as “Running Man – Love & Other Marathons” which touches on escaping from an abusive/toxic relationship to find true love & “Sleeping Beauty & M.E” which as well as briefly alluding to the same also focuses on my fiancee’s main condition – M.E).

      If you’ve already taken the plunge and Followed me, thank you for doing so. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your feedback. Glad it spoke to you. Wouldn’t say it’s exclusively about the older generation though. My fiancée Phoebe has had M.E & other conditions since she was a child.

      I was also trapped in an abusive relationship for years & made to feel like a burden.

      Definitely a believer that it’s never too late to find love though and can see how a number of the lines would work for elderly people who were made to feel like burdens.
